why is sustainable design important ?
Sustainable Design is important for our Mother Earth. One of the important focus of Sustainable Design is to preserve the natural resources and use them with caution so as to protect our Mother Earth from devastation.
The above definition is based on two concepts:
- The concept of needs, comprising of the conditions for maintaining an acceptable life standard for all people and
- The concept of limits of the capacity of the environment to fulfil the needs of the present and the future, determined by the state of technology and social organization.
Architecture and Sustainability Factors
Architecture presents a unique challenge in the field of sustainability. Building construction typically consumes large quantities of materials while producing tons of waste. It sometimes involves comparing the preservation of buildings of historical significance with new developments.
Sustainable construction may therefore be defined as “creation and responsible management of a healthy built environment based on ecological principles”. Sustainable buildings, therefore, aim to lessen their impact on our environment through efficiency in energy and resources.
It involves the following principles:
- To enhance natural environment.
- To minimise consumption of non-renewable resources.
- To eliminate or to minimise use of hazardous materials.
A sustainable building may also be defined as the one that has a minimum adverse impact on the built and natural environment, in terms of the building itself and its immediate surroundings as a minimum. A rational use of natural resources and appropriate management during construction will contribute to saving useful resources, reducing power consumption and improving environment quality Read more...
